Application Materials

While a great resume and cover letter alone probably won’t get you a job (if you’re not networking with the companies you want to work for and getting referred for positions), they are often still a very important part of the process.

Writing effective resumes and cover letters takes more than just putting your experiences on paper – it involves marketing yourself and carefully targeting your skills and experiences to each position you apply for. In this section, you’ll be able to learn everything you need to know to craft effective application materials.

What would you like to do?

Virtual workshops on both Resumes and Cover Letters are available to help you learn how to craft application documents that effectively market your qualifications for the positions you’re applying for. Each workshop takes about 30-40 minutes to complete. (Click here to see all available virtual workshops.)

Want a quick overview or to look at samples? Get our Resume Handout for an overview of the basics and how to target your resume, and sample combination and functional resumes, or get the Cover Letter Handout for a walk-through of the format and content of a cover letter, as well as tips and samples.

If you have 1 minute, you have time to learn more about what it means to target your resume and why it matters.

After you’ve used the resources above (particularly the virtual workshops), if you still have questions or would like a resume or cover letter review, send your latest draft and your questions to a Career Success Advisor. You will then be scheduled for the next available time the advisor has to respond to your request. Keep in mind that we also offer hour long in-person and phone appointments (call 208-426-1747 to schedule) and 15 minute walk-in sessions on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 2-4 p.m. when classes are in session during the fall and spring semesters.
