Self-knowledge and exploration, career and educational exploration, and career planning and implementation are the three steps involved in answering these questions.  The Career and Life Planning course will take you through the whole career development process, helping you to gain the self-knowledge you need to research and choose appropriate career goals, learn how to enter the job force, and maintain a successful and rewarding career.

Self-Knowledge and Self-Assessment: What Do I Really Want?
Knowing yourself is the first step in choosing a satisfying career and major. Students will examine their interests, skills, values, and personality through a variety of methods in order to discover their ideal work identity.

Career and Educational Exploration:  What's Out There For Me?
All the self-knowledge in the world won't help you if you don't know what your options are, or how to find out! Students will learn how to research careers and make appropriate decisions regarding their career and educational plans.

Career Planning and Implementation:  How Do I Get What I Want?
The final step is actually getting the job you want! Don't be one of those people who graduates college and never really uses their degree because they didn't have the necessary job search skills! Students learn the best strategies for identifying job openings, writing resumes and cover letters, and interviewing successfully.

Other topics that may be covered in the course include:
  • Is college for me?
  • Getting part-time jobs while in school
  • Overcoming barriers to education and employment
  • Strategies for setting and achieving goals
  • Strategies for managing stress and getting through school
  • Professional etiquette
  • How to mingle
  • Succeeding in your first professional job
  • The job I want doesn't pay very well! Strategies for managing your money
  • Preparing for graduate school
  • How important is my major?
