Work Study

Q:  Does the Career Center help with referral to on-campus jobs?
A:  Yes, both Work-Study and non-Work-Study jobs are listed on BroncoJobs, the Career Center’s web-based, job-referral system.  Work-Study jobs require that students have a financial-aid award for Work Study since these are funded through state and federal work-study programs.  Many of the campus departments employ student help for a variety of positions.  Since not all departments post their jobs, also inquire at the department in which you have an interest or view their web site (e.g. Rec Center, Student Union, Aramark Food Service, Campus Bookstore, Library).

Q:  Where can I find Work-Study jobs?
A:  You can find Work-Study jobs online within BroncoJobs - http://career.boisestate.edu/broncojobs.  It is, however, not a requirement for departments to post openings with the Career Center on BroncoJobs.  If there are no current jobs that interest you, we recommend that you contact departments of interest or view their websites for employment opportunities.

Q:  How do I search for Work-Study jobs on BroncoJobs?
A:
You can search specifically for on-campus positions, which include Work-Study jobs in BroncoJobs.  Please contact the Career Center for additional assistance - 208-426-1747.

Q:  How do I apply for a Work-Study job?
A:  How to apply for Work-Study jobs varies by department.  The job description in BroncoJobs will specify how to apply; click on the job title to get details on the job and application procedures.

Q:  Am I guaranteed a Work-Study job?
A:  You are not guaranteed a Work-Study job.  You will need to find the available jobs and apply as you would for any employment opportunity.  You do not lose your eligibility for Work-Study in the future if you don’t use the Work-Study award as long as you continue to qualify for financial aid.

Q:  If there aren’t any Work-Study jobs available, what should I do?
AIf you cannot find a Work-Study job that meets your needs, you can use BroncoJobs to find other on- or off-campus jobs.  All types of positions, including non-Work Study on-campus jobs and student-employment off-campus jobs, are posted daily on BroncoJobs.

Q:  How do I learn more about applying for jobs on campus?
A:  Read the Student Employee Handbook for Student Employees.

Career Planning

Q:   I haven’t decided on a major, where should I go?
A:   Contact the Career Center for an appointment with a career counselor, which includes DISCOVER, an interests, abilities, and values inventory assessment.

Q:  I haven’t decided which classes to take, where should I go?
A:  If you have decided on a major you should see your academic advisor in your department; if you are undecided on a major, the Gateway Center can assist in choosing your classes.  The Career Center can help you decide on a major and advise you on the selection of elective classes that might help you be more employable upon graduation.

Q:  How do I get an advisor?
A:
To obtain an advisor you should go to the department in which you have chosen your major or if you are undecided, the Gateway Center staff can temporarily help you until you declare a major.

Q:  What is DISCOVER?
A:  DISCOVER is an online career assessment that assesses your interests, abilities, and values to help you decide what field of study might be best for you.  You can explore occupations through the World of Work Map and the results of your inventories, which includes national information on careers--job descriptions, job outlook, pay, training and education requirements -- to help you make informed career decisions.

Q:  How do I access the DISCOVER test?
A:  DISCOVER is a career assessment rather than a test.  To gain access to DISCOVER you must first be admitted for the current or next semester with Boise State or be a current student or alumni.  You can then contact the Career Center for an appointment with the Career Counselor.  During your appointment you will be given a username to use DISCOVER.  If you are unable to come to campus a telephone appointment can be arranged.  After taking the assessment, it is recommended that you come in for a follow-up appointment to discuss the results.

Q:  Does the Career Center give the Myers-Briggs inventory?
A:  Yes – after an appointment with a career counselor.  There is a $15 fee.  This service is available only to registered Boise State students or graduates.  Call 426-1747 to schedule a career-counseling appointment.

Q:  I am not a Boise State University student.  Can you help me find a job/career?
A:  The Career Center services are offered to current Boise State students and to Boise State University graduates.

If you plan to attend Boise State but have not applied for admissions, contact the Admissions Office at (208) 426-1820 or 1-800-824-7017 or visit their website at http://admissions.boisestate.edu/faqs.shtml.  Contact the Career Center after you have a Certificate of Admissions or have registered for classes.

If you are not planning to attend Boise State you can visit the Career Center website for links to other career and employment resources in the area.

 FAQ’s for Employers

Q:  Does the Career Center run background checks?
A:  No.  The screening process is up to the employer.

Q:  Is there a charge to post my job opening?
A:  There is no charge to post a position with BroncoJobs.  Because of our reporting to meet federal requirements, the only obligation is for you to inform us of the hire if it was a student-employment job.

Q:  What kinds of jobs does the Career Center post?
A:  We post jobs that pay an hourly wage or salary, and we post internships.  If the pay for your position is based solely on commission, request a “Commission Only” form from the Career Center for us to determine if it meets our criteria for listing.  The Career Center does not post positions where the student must pay for a product to sell.  Typically the Career Center does not post for staffing agencies, but if there is an urgent need, please contact the Career Center to see if it can be posted.

Q:  How do I post a job?
A:  You can post your position by
logging into
BroncoJobs.

Q:  How long does the ad run?
A:  The ad can run until the date you specify. If you do not wish to specify a date, it will run for 30 days.

Q:  Does the Career Center post volunteer jobs?
A:  Volunteer positions are posted with Boise State Volunteer Services Board -http://union.boisestate.edu/vsb/home.html.

Q:  How much should I pay?
A: For student employment opportunities, the higher you set the wage, the more likely it is that you will obtain qualified applicants.  The minimum wage in Idaho is $5.85 per hour (as of 07/24/07).  Most internships are paid, however, that is not a requirement and typically varies with major.  Salaries for career employment opportunities for graduates and alumni vary greatly according to the discipline and the applicant’s experience level.  Idaho Commerce and Labor website - http://www.jobservice.ws/?PAGEID=67&SUBID=174 - is a starting point for some good data on Idaho wages/salaries.
